Building a State of Equality in Texas
December 13, 2015
Dear James,
Mayor Electd Sylvester Turner
Yesterday Houstonians turned out and elected Sylvester Turner their next mayor. Endorsed by the Texas Equity PAC, the political action committee of Equality Texas, Turner won the race with 51% of the vote. Turner defeated Bill King, the former mayor of Kemah who had signed a pledge opposing nondiscrimination protections for LGBT Houstonians.
Sylvester Turner’s election is a victory for all of us. Make no mistake, there is much work to be done to educate the public about the need for, and benefits of, comprehensive nondiscrimination protections. We must take the time necessary to ensure that any future nondiscrimination ordinance in the City of Houston will be fully inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity & expression in employment, housing, and public spaces. Anything less would be a non-starter.
For now, we celebrate the election of Sylvester Turner knowing that, as the Mayor-elect would say, "we're all in this together".
