Dear ACLU Supporter,
Alicia Butler, a Texas National Guard Service member, went to the Texas Military Forces headquarters in Austin to apply for benefits for her wife—to whom she is legally married. She was denied and directed to drive 120 miles to a U.S. Army post in order to apply for an ID card.
Sign the petition to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel: Stop the Texas National Guard from denying benefits to same-sex couples.
Federal law now requires that all legally married service members be permitted to apply for benefits for their families. But a spokesman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Texas will deny equal access to military benefits for National Guard families.
Nearly all states are now allowing federal coverage for benefits to be processed for same-sex spouses—except Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Mississippi.
Stand up for equality for Alicia and all of the men and women who fight for our freedom. All states, including Texas, should treat all legally married service members equally and honor their sacrifices, not throw up roadblocks to access services for some military families.
Urge the Department of Defense to enforce equal access to benefits for all military families.
Sincerely,
ACLU of Texas
