Discrimination is heading to the ballot in Houston

Just moments ago, the Houston City Council voted to send the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), a law that protects citizens from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, race, religion, and eleven other categories, to a referendum on the November 3 ballot. Their vote comes as a result of the Texas Supreme Court's ruling requiring the Council to either overturn the ordinance or send it to the ballot. Opponents of LGBT equality, led by the Texas Pastors Council, gathered signatures last year to require HERO to go to the ballot. Even though they apparently failed to gather enough valid signatures, the court ruled in their favor. Because turnout in these elections is historically extremely low and opponents of equality will be highly mobilized, every vote will count. Pledge to support the campaign in Houston. "HRC fought hard for these protections, alongside Mayor Annise Parker, the Houston City Council, and our allies - including Equality Texas, Texas Freedom Network, and the ACLU of Texas, among others. We were proud to stand alongside these and other allies and partners, and we will stand strong with them once again to fight back against this effort to take away the needed protections of LGBT and other Houstonians" – HRC President Chad Griffin HRC will commit staff and financial resources to defend the ordinance, and the HRC Houston Steering Committee will be a driving force recruiting volunteers and field support for the campaign.
